Couples Therapy Couples usually seek counseling because they are at an impasse; one that may develop during the beginning, middle or later stages of their relationship. The reason for the impasse can include life transitions, stress, poor communication, and sometimes incompatibility. You or your partner may bury feelings, withdraw, feel particularly needy, or become resentful. In turn, you (the couple) become distanced from each other. Couples therapy helps you understand the psychological reasons (past and present) that have led to the current dynamics, teaches healthier ways to communicate, and encourages greater empathy for each other and each other’s struggles. Couples therapy also encourages mutually beneficial behavioral changes. The ultimate goal of couples therapy is to foster greater fulfillment in your relationship, and to rekindle what attracted you to each other. |
